At the beginning of each school year, students register for the Zanzibar Schools Project's after-school English and life-skills classes. For the 2017 academic year it received over 90 registrations.
To celebrate the start of its 2017 programme, ZSP threw a beach party for students. The girls were given special 'burkinis' so they could play in the sea like the boys - the first time for most of them.
In addition providing daily classes, ZSP gives their students a free lunch before classes begin, vital to maintaining their energy levels and ability to concentrate. Most will not have eaten little since the previous night as their families cannot afford more than one meal per day.
Teachers in rural schools are poorly trained and underpaid and many have to take second jobs to make ends meet. This is their staff room.
In addition to its work at the Unguja Ukuu primary school, ZSP helps with fundraising for the new English language nursery school set up in the village by two local teachers.
Because of the huge successs of it’s 2017 programme, the intake for 2018 increased to over 200 students.
